There are two forms of the plant, one producing sweet almonds, and the other producing bitter almonds. Major producers include Greece, Iran, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Syria, Turkey, and the United States.
In Spain, numerous commercial cultivars of sweet almond are produced, most notably the Jordan almond (imported from Málaga) and the Valencia almond. Of all the different types of Spanish almonds the Marcona is the most valued, not in vain has it been called "the queen of almonds".
